Dear Reader,
Apple and honey - PaL

As the days grow shorter and the nights draw in you, do you find yourself suffering from a lack of inspiration? Don't despair! In truth the quiet month of Cheshvan is perfect for settling down to learn something new or brushing up on a rusty skill!

To get you started we've included some short courses of study in our Community Round Up below, as well as highlighting some fascinating new reading material - perfect for delving into with a cup of hot chocolate on a chilly autumn evening!

Have a good month

Questions from the PaL Mailbag...

Q: I've been reading a lot in the news recently about various campaigns to encourage people to use their local shops and bolster them  against the onslaught of department stores and cut-price supermarkets. I was wondering what the Jewish take on this is? If I can buy Kiddush wine in the supermarket for a third of the price that the kosher stores are charging, am I still obligated to take my business to the Jewish-owned shop regardless?

A: Supporting local shops encourages the development of the Jewish community, protects peoples' incomes and preserves variety, all of which are things that should be encouraged.  In normal circumstances, it is certainly appropriate to pay a small premium to buy goods sold in local Jewish shops; the difference may be regarded as a charitable contribution.  However, if one's finances are very limited, or the product is substantially cheaper elsewhere, one need not purchase from local shops.
