December 2015
Kisleiv 5776
Dear Reader,
The PaL team enjoyed meeting new tutors and partners at the Sem and Yeshiva Fair at the beginning of November.
Chanukah is fast approaching; the wonderful festival of lights. Chanukah is a prime opportunity to come together with family and friends and enjoy latkes and doughnuts whilst to learning about our Jewish Heritage and the history of our People. It is a time for togetherness, a time for sharing not only the lights of Chanukah but also the story and lasting message of Chanukah.
Instead of learning your usual topics this week perhaps consider reviewing the laws, customs and ideas of Chanukah in preparation for a festival that will fill our world with light.
Happy Chanukah
Warm regards
The PaL Team

Questions from the PaL Mailbag...
Q: Why do we use an eight-branched menorah on Chanukah and are there any rules governing a Chanukah menorah
A: The menorah in the Mishkan, later used in the Temple, had seven branches (Shemot 25:32). Although Chanukah celebrates the rededication of the Temple and relighting of the menorah during the second Temple period, the design of the Chanukah menorah is only loosely based on its Temple antecedent.  The main difference is that the Chanukah menorah has eight branches (plus one for an additional light to emphasise that the menorah is for contemplation, not to light the room) so that eight lamps can be lit on the final night.  It is a symbolic, rather than halachically faithful representation of the Temple menorah.  To allow a passer-by to determine easily which night of Chanukah is being celebrated, the branches of the menorah should be made in a straight line at the same height as each other.
