Dear Reader,
PK audience

The onset of Ellul means Rosh Hashanah is on the horizon and many of us will be looking to inject an extra dose of inspiration into our lives. Hopefully the calendar events and new book releases listed here will help to bring that goal closer.

Wishing you a very enjoyable summer and looking forward to seeing you at our pre-Rosh Hashanah lecture in September!

Questions from the PaL Mailbag...

Q: Why do we start blowing the shofar in shul at the beginning of Ellul specifically? And does it matter that I'll be on holiday far away from any Jewish community at the time (1st Ellul is the 11th August this year!) and won't be able to get to shul to hear it?

A: Although there is only a Biblical Mitzvah to blow the shofar on Rosh HaShanah itself, there is a long-standing tradition to blow the shofar every weekday morning during the month of Ellul.  This is because Ellul is treated as a period of preparation for the forthcoming Days of Awe and the shofar focuses one's aspirations on self-improvement and personal growth that are appropriate at this time of the year.  Historically, the month of Ellul was also the start of the final 40 days which Moshe spent on Mount Sinai, at the end of which, on Yom Kippur, he returned to the Israelites to tell them that G-d had finally forgiven them for the sin of the Golden Calf.  The practice to blow the shofar during Elul is a communal one, and so if you're away from the community there is no need to worry about it. However, you can always take a shofar along and blow it yourself!
