Dear Reader,

It is great to be back at PaL

We've barely had time to catch our breath from Purim but there's no time to relax because Pesach is on its way! Make sure you take the time to prepare yourself for this most important Yom Tov - spiritually as well as
physically. Set aside the dustpan and cleaning cloth for a little while and browse through one of the myriad of Haggadas now on the market, or book a place at one of the Pesach-inspired lectures and events highlighted below.

Please note that the PaL office will be closed between Friday 22nd April and Monday 2nd May (inclusive).

Wishing you all a chag kasher ve'sameach!

Warm regards

Questions from the PaL Mailbag...

Q: I have heard that there is a custom not to eat Matza in the weeks preceding Pesach?  From when does this apply, and does it also apply to young children?  I was planning on giving my children matzah in place of challah the Shabbos before Pesach.

A
Eating matzah at the seder is central to the entire Pesach experience.  The early Rabbis were keen to ensure that we reach seder night excited to perform this mitzva (commandment) so they forbade the consumption of matzah and baked matzah products on erev Pesach (the day before Pesach).  While eating matzah on the days before erev Pesach is permitted by Jewish law, other customs developed which extended the abstention from matzah to start from the beginning of Nissan or even Purim, all in the interests of increasing the excitement for seder night.  Even if your family custom is to abstain from matzah for an extended period, it is permitted to give small children matzah on the Shabbos before Pesach.
