Dear Reader,

We have had a very exciting month at PaL.  We started by re-launching our Facebook and Instagram pages.  If you are on Facebook or Instagram, please follow us and share / comment on our post.
This past week we were honoured to host a double helping of pre-Rosh Hashana lectures where Rabbi Paysach Krohn enthralled and inpsired the packed crowds.  It was great to meet many of our PaL tutors and partners and to welcome so many new tutors and partners. If you did not manage to attend the lecture in North West London, you can watch it online here.

Looking ahead, in about 5 weeks it is ShabbatUK.  This year PaL has created some fantastic short courses to explain the Why's and How's of;
  • Preparing for Shabbat
  • Shabbat Table
  • Shabbat Services
Each course is only two, half-hour sessions and can be learned on the phone or skype with a PaL tutor.  Please spread the word and tell your family / friends to sign up email info@phoneandlearn.org or visit www.phoneandlearn.org to be part of this exciting project.

You can find out about events of interest in our Round Up below; alternatively you could pick up a new Jewish book to study - take a look at the new releases we've highlighted.

Wishing you all a Shana Tova and an easy fast.

Warm regards

Questions from the PaL Mailbag...
Q: I'm a bit confused as to the status of the last two days of the Succos festival, Shemini Atzeres and Simchas Torah. Are they part of Succos or are they something completely separate? And if they are part of Succos, why do some people leave their Succah and take their meals indoors on Shemini Atzeres?
A: The last day of Succos is really a festival all of its own - Shemini Atzeres. It has its own liturgy and we recite the 'shehechiyanu' bracha (thanking G-d for sustaining our lives), as it is a separate festival.  Loosely translated, its name means 'eighth day on which the festival cycle comes to an end' - it's the eighth day from the beginning of Succos.  Long ago, the Rabbis decided to fix the annual Torah-reading cycle to begin and end at this time of year and it became traditional to turn the day into a celebration for the Torah, known as Simchas Torah.  In the Diaspora, where each one-day Biblical festival is extended to two days, Simchas Torah is marked on the second day of Shemini Atzeres; in Israel, they are rolled into one.  There is one remaining complication - in the Diaspora, the eighth day, Shemini Atzeres doubles as the 'doubtful' seventh day of Succos, which is why many people still eat in the Succah.  That is, of course, if it's not raining!
