Dear Reader,

As October turns to November, we embark on an entire month without festivals or holidays - four full weeks of work or study stretch ahead of us!

Yet to brighten up the darkness, it is just 1 week until Shabbat UK / The Shabbos Project

PaL has created some fantastic short courses to explain the Why's and How's of;
  • Preparing for Shabbat
  • Shabbat Table
  • Shabbat Services
Each course is only two, half-hour sessions and can be learned on the phone or skype with a PaL tutor.  Watch this video: https://youtu.be/LCcR1VR0W8U and pass it onto your family and friends who might be interested.  To sign up email info@phoneandlearn.org or visit www.phoneandlearn.org

You can find out about events of interest in our Round Up below; alternatively you could pick up a new Jewish book to study - take a look at the new releases we've highlighted.

Warm regards

Questions from the PaL Mailbag...

Q: Shabbat UK and other great initiatives have encouraged lots of us to think about reaching out to members of the Jewish community who have not yet experienced a traditional Shabbat meal.  But if a potential guest may drive to one's home on Shabbat, is it still permissible to issue the invitation?

A: While there is a range of Rabbinic opinion on this topic, a prevalent view, attributed to Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Auerbach zt"l, is that if the guest lives within walking distance (let's say an hour for a healthy adult), there is no concern.  But if the person lives further away, it would be correct to offer him or her somewhere to stay for Shabbat. Even if that offer is not accepted, it remains permitted to host him or her for a Shabbat meal.  If even this isn't practical, Rabbinic advice should be sought.
