Dear Reader,

I hope you have had a relaxing winter holidays and are now gearing up to going back to work, university or school.  If you are resuming your learning sessions after the holidays, hopefully your PaL learning sessions will warm you up during the remaining winter months.  Should you want ideas for a new topic to learn please contact the PaL team on 0800 055 3276 for some suggestions.

You can find out about events of interest in the Round Up below.  Or you could simply decide to pick up a new Jewish book to study - take a look at the new releases I've highlighted.

Warm regards

Questions from the PaL Mailbag...

Q: Is the fast of the 10th Teves considered to be one of the more minor or major fasts in Judaism? I've never learnt very much about it but wonder if it's something I ought to consider observing, like the 9th Av?

A: The prophets instituted four annual fasts to commemorate the destruction of the Temple.  These ensure that we never forget that Jewish life without the Temple is bereft of its spiritual locus.  Tisha B'Av (9th Av), which marks the destruction itself, is obviously the most major of these - indeed, it lasts for a full day and incorporates many additional restrictions and mourning rituals.  The other three are 17th Tammuz, Tzom Gedaliah (3rd Tishrei) and 10th Teves, which marks the beginning of the siege of Jerusalem prior to the destruction of the First Temple.  These fasts are 'minor' in that they last from dawn to dusk and they have few restrictions, but they are important in that they keep alive our hope for a better, redeemed, world.
