6summer
Dear Reader,

PaL sign and box
The summer holidays are finally upon us but thanks to PaL's flexibility, learning partnerships can continue with their usual schedules unabated! No matter where you find yourself in the world, the transition from learning at home to learning abroad requires nothing more than getting to grips with the time difference! Some partners and tutors are even making use of Skype to study across broadband lines during overseas vacations. However, if you need more telephone calling card pin numbers, please don't hesitate to telephone the PaL office on 08000 J-LEARN (553 276) or email info@phoneandlearn.org.

Have a wonderful summer

PaL is delighted that world-renowned author and speaker Rabbi Paysach Krohn will be delivering our annual pre-Rosh Hashanah lecture once again! We hope that many of our partners and tutors will be able to attend, perhaps taking the opportunity to meet up in person and enjoy this inspiring event!

Rabbi Krohn will be speaking at the Hasmonean Boys School, Hendon on Tuesday 8 September (19 Ellul) at 8pm, on the subject of 'Proud of our Past, Preparing for Our Future. Timely Perspectives for the Yomim Nora'im'.

Doors open at 7.30pm, there is ample parking on site and both men and women are welcome. Suggested donation £5.

Looking forward to seeing you there!

Questions from the PaL Mailbag...

Q: Why is it forbidden in Jewish law to anaesthetise an animal before shechita, ritual slaughter?

A: The answer is three-fold.

1. It is important to remember that shechita causes virtually no pain to the animal. It's like a paper cut. There is a sudden and large loss of blodd, which means the animal becomes unconscious extremely quickly, so there is no need or even much point to anaesthetics.

2. It s a requirement for the animal to be both fully healthy and in good physical shape before shechita. Giving an anaesthetic is consequently problematic because it prevents the blood from coming out of the animal properly.

3. As a result of both of these factors, stunning or anaesthetising the animal is forbidden according to Jewish law.

Partners and Tutors are invited to email questions arising from their PaL learning to asktherabbi@phoneandlearn.org
