As October turns to November, we embark on an entire month without festivals or holidays - four full weeks of work or study stretch ahead of us!

Don't hesitate to contact us at the PaL office for any learning enquiries - perhaps you would like some advice about which topic to focus on during your learning sessions.  Call us on 0800 055 3276!

You can find out about events of interest in our Round Up below; alternatively you could pick up a new Jewish book to study - take a look at the new releases we've highlighted.

Questions from the PaL Mailbag...
QI recently started learning Rashi and have been wondering, what is Rashi Script and where did it come from?
AHebrew texts are printed in a variety of scripts. Some are 'square' - these are familiar from siddurim.  Others are 'script', resembling handwriting and are more commonly used for informal settings.  A popular cursive script, in which some letters are different from those in other scripts, is colloquially known as 'Rashi Script'.  This is because Rashi's commentaries to the Tenach and Talmud are commonly printed in this style, mostly to clearly distinguish the gloss from the text itself.  Since the script was based on 15th-century Sephardi handwriting styles, it cannot have been known to Rashi himself, who died in 1105.  The universal identification of this script with Rashi is testimony to the timeless popularity of Rashi's commentaries.
