Questions from the PaL Mailbag...
Q: In the run up to Shavuos my partner and I have been reviewing Megillas Rus together. We were wondering how Naomi and her husband Elimelech could allow their two sons to marry Rus and Orpah when they weren't Jewish at the time?
A: There is a disagreement between the mediaeval authorities as to whether Rus and Orpah converted before their marriages.  However both options present a problem.  If they weren't converted beforehand, then there is your question of how Naomi and Elimelech could allow their sons to marry them. But if they were, then what was Rus doing later on and why was Orpah sent back?  Perhaps the simplest answer is to explain that the failings of Machlon and Chilion included marrying these two women.
