Dear Reader,
Crocuses in the the Snow

As the country shivers under plunging temperatures, its hard to believe that later this month we'll be marking the onset of Spring with Tu B'Shvat. But PaL is all about growth and renewal, so the shift to a Spring mindset shouldn't be too hard to make. To help you along, our Tu B'Shvat pack will be wending its way to tutors and partners later this week!

Don't forget to keep us posted on your PaL learning and let me know if there are any topics you'd like us to devote future 'themed mailout packs' to as well.

Have an enjoyable month

Warm wishes

Questions from the PaL Mailbag...

Q: I've heard that some people have the custom to save their esrog from Succos to eat on Tu B'Shvat. It doesn't sound very tasty! What's the meaning behind this idea?

A: Tu B'Shvat (15th Shvat) began life as a technical point in the agricultural cycle - it was the year-end for tithing fruit.  By association, it later became a day on which people celebrated G-d's bounty by eating a range of fruits, especially those for which the Land of Israel is renowned.  While the esrog is not one of these fruits, it holds a special place in Jewish thought, due to its use on Succos and the fact that according to some Midrashic sources, it was the fruit from which Adam and Eve ate in the Garden of Eden.  According to Rabbi Zvi Elimelech miDinuv (Beney Yissaschar), a prominent Chassidic author of 200 years ago, since the sap is starting to rise in the trees on Tu B'Shvat, it is an auspicious time to pray for a beautiful esrog for the following Succos.  To acknowledge this link, many people make jam after Succos from their esrog and save it to eat on Tu B'Shvat.
