Dear Reader,
Apple and honey - PaL

Kislev is coming and even though it seems Succos is barely behind us, the warm light of Chanukah is already beckoning and I for one can almost smell the doughnuts!

There are a few more weeks of Autumn to enjoy before we hit winter proper though - hopefully as the weather turns colder you're enjoying the benefits of learning over the phone from the cosy comfort of your own home! Keep us posted with your PaL feedback and ideas.

Warm wishes

Questions from the PaL Mailbag...

Q: At the shabbos table recently my host mentioned in passing that the Jewish zodiac sign for the month of Kislev is a bow or a rainbow. I'm interested in finding out why - but even more than that, I was surprised to find that Judaism had zodiac signs at all - I thought we weren't supposed to believe in that kind of thing. I'd be grateful if you could enlighten me!

A: Judaism does not believe in zodiac signs as astrological phenomena that pre-determine one's destiny.  However, in the Jewish mystical tradition, each month is associated with a tribe, a colour, a Hebrew letter and a zodiac sign.  These characterise the spiritual atmosphere of the month and help the Jew to understand its religious potential and expectations.  For example, Nisan, the month of Exodus is Aries (the lamb is the symbol of the vanquished deity of Egypt) and Tishrei is Libra, the scales of judgement upon which every human being is weighed during that month. The forthcoming month of Kislev is Sagittarius, the bow; the primary expression of the character of Kislev is the successful religious war waged by the Hasmoneans against their Greek oppressors, celebrated at Chanukah. The symbol of Kislev is the bow of war, faith and active trust in G-d.
