Dear Reader,

If you're looking for some inspiration to get you through the Three Weeks before Tisha B'Av, our book recommendation, "What's the Purpose" by Rabbi Hillel Rotenberg, could be the perfect choice, showing us the importance of using our lives in this world to achieve our true purpose. On Tisha B'Av itself (30 July) the JLE will be running a full day programme of services, classes and video presentations - see below for more details!

Questions from the PaL Mailbag...

Q: An American Evangelical Christian friend of mine mentioned that she will not swear allegiance to the USA flag because it is thought of as idolatry. If UK plans to include an oath of allegiance as part of primary school citizenship classes come to fruition, what would the ramifications be for Jews? Would this be considered to be idol-worship?

A: I don't see it as being problematic. It is common in the USA in even very religious schools to swear allegiance in this way.It seems very far-fetched to suggest that swearing allegiance to the flag means that one attributes power to the flag itself, which would be considered idolatry. Rather, it means that one commits oneself to live by the laws and ideals of the country, as represented by the flag.
