Dear Reader,

PaL sign and boxWelcome!
With Shavuos coming up in just a few weeks, May is set to be a busy and exciting month! In terms of learning events in the comunity, you'll be spoilt for choice with what's on offer at the JLE and seed, both for yom tov itself and in the run up to it. If you and your PaL live close enough to one another, why not attend a shiur together either in addition to or instead of your regular learning session?
Wishing you a pleasant month!

Questions from the PaL Mailbag...
Q: From where do we learn that a minyan must constitute 10 men and that women do not count towards making up the minyan?
A: The Torah source for this halacha is defined by the gemora as coming from the incident of the 10 spies. The  reasoning behind it lies strongly in the Oral tradition. Kabbalistically, 10 men must constitute a minyan as a rectification for the sin of the 10 spies in speaking badly of the land of Israel. Furthermore, one purpose of praying with a minyan is to train men to look towards a higher goal and teach them to focus less on their own macho agendas. Women have much less of a need for this and are more naturally focused on working together with others.
