Questions from the PaL Mailbag...

Q: What is the halacha (Jewish law) in regards to praying with bare or stockinged feet - is this permissable? Also, does the practice of not stepping over someone who is sitting or lying on the floor have any basis in halacha or is it just an old wives' tale?

A:  There is no problem with walking around one's house in bare feet, although one should at least wear socks when it comes to davening. The practice of not stepping over someone however would seem simply to be a 'bubbe maaseh' - an old wives' tale!
