Questions from the PaL Mailbag...

Q: Is it really a 'mitzvah' to get drunk on Purim or simply a custom that people tend to take a little too far?

A:The Talmud (Megillah 7b) says that 'one is obliged to become so intoxicated on Purim that one cannot distinguish between cursed is Haman and blessed is Mordechai', a rule that is to be observed only during the Purim feast, and not throughout Purim.  Some authorities assume that this means that one should 'drink more than usual, until one falls asleep', although others seem to take the obligation more literally!  Purim is a day on which in which we are encouraged to make profound connections: with others, with G-d, and with ourselves - drinking removes our inhibitions, and, in the right environment, enables to get in touch with inner lives a little more than on other days.  However, extreme drinking that leads to vulgar behaviour or loss of control is always forbidden, even at the Purim feast.  As Rama writes in the laws of Purim: 'whether one drinks a lot or a little, one's heart must always be inclined heavenward'.
