Dear Reader,

PaL sign and box

It's hard to believe that the summer holidays are almost here (let's hope we haven't seen the last of the sun though...!).

But before you head off for some well earned rest and relaxation, mark out Tuesday September 20th in your diary as the date of Rabbi Paysach Krohn's 2011 pre-Rosh Hashanah lecture for PaL. More details to follow next month!

Warm wishes

Questions from the PaL Mailbag...
Q:  My PaL tutor explained to me that the restrictions of the 'Three Weeks' include not listening to music as a sign of mourning for the destruction of the Temple. But that was nearly 2000 years ago and I just don't think I can cope without my ipod for the better part of a month! Is she right or is she exaggerating?

A:17th Tammuz (this year, 19th July) begins the saddest period of the Jewish year, culminating in the 'black fast' of Tisha B'Av (this year, 9th August), which is the anniversary of the destruction of the Temple and of many other calamities of Jewish history.  During this period, we avoid activities associated with rejoicing - there are no weddings or live concerts, and it is forbidden to buy new clothes. We also avoid bathing for pleasure (in first 9 days of Av) and haircuts.  While listening to recorded music is not the same as its live counterpart, it is still a joyful distraction from the sombreness of the season.  It's hard for modern Jews to relate to the loss of the Temple, but this period is supposed to sensitise us to the loss of the spiritual focus of Jewish life, something that continues to reverberate throughout our history.
