Questions from the PaL Mailbag...
Q:  I always thought that blowing the shofar was unique to Rosh Hashanah but one of my kids told me that in school he was told the shofar is blown for a whole month beforehand as well. Why? And do I have the same obligation to go and hear it as I do on yom tov?"

A: The Biblical Mitzvah to hear the shofar applies only on Rosh Hashanah itself.  However, if you've ever visited a Shul on a weekday during the month of Ellul, you will have heard the shofar sounded briefly at the end of Shacharis (Morning Service).  This late post-talmudic custom is intended to alert us to the approaching Yom Tov season and to help inspire us to recognise the need for introspection as the Jewish year draws to a close.  The origin of the practice is a midrash, which notes that Moshe ascended Mount Sinai for the third time, accompanied by shofar blasts, on the first day of Ellul.  At the end of a forty-day period, he would return on Yom Kippur to deliver the second tablets and announce that G-d had finally pardoned the Israelites for the sin of the Golden Calf.  We replicate that process by blowing the shofar throughout Ellul.  However, unlike on Rosh Hashanah itself, hearing the shofar during Ellul is only a custom and one need not attend Shul specially for it.
