Dear Judy,

PaL is proud to be teaming up with our sister organisation in the USA, Partners in Torah, to celebrate the 12th Siyum HaShas in August 2012, which marks the completion of the entire Babylonian Talmud, page by page, day by day, in a seven-year cycle.

To take part, all you need to do is choose a siyum-focused topic to learn with your PaL and aim to finish in time for August 2012. We will bring you details of the UK Siyum HaShas in due course - but in the meantime feel free to explore the dedicated website www.mysiyum.com for more information.

You can read more about the Siyum HaShas in our blog - simply click here to follow!  And don't forget - we're looking forward to seeing you at the Jewish Living Expo on March 18th - www.jewishlivingexpo.com.

Wishing you a very happy Purim

Warm wishes

Questions from the PaL Mailbag...

Q: The other day I heard a colleague referring to Purim as 'the Jewish answer to Halloween'. I realise Purim is so much more than that - but I didn't quite know how to refute the claim without launching into a 'long megilla'! Can you give me a succinct way to summarise Purim and what it means to us?

A: Purim seems like a fun, frivolous day, in which kids dress up, adults do crazy things, there is a carnival spirit and rather a lot of wine around.  But although the day should be thoroughly enjoyed, it has a very serious and powerful purpose.  Purim is actually a fulfilment of the mitzvah to recall our arch-enemy Amalek, who introduced to the world the notion of atheism and its cynical consequences.  The megillah, which contains the story of the eventual victory of the Jews of ancient over Haman, an Amalekite, appears to be a collection of unconnected events.  Yet if it is read carefully, it reveals G-d's guiding hand in history, refuting the idea of a random universe.

Every other aspect of Purim celebrates our conviction in the meaningfulness of all experiences - by building relationships with others, through gifts to friends and to the poor, and celebrating the power of every aspect of life, through the festive meal, rejoicing and drinking.
