Issue 32
June 2012
Sivan 5772

Dear Reader,

Last month was an extremely busy one for PaL - not only did I visit Israel to speak at the Tribe Closing the Gap dinner (read more about it here) but the PaL trustees were on the move as well.

Yehuda Wittenberg and his family joined the Giffnock community in Glasgow for Shabbos, speaking to over 100 people and offering them the opportunity to join the PaL programme.  We look forward to working

closely with Rabbi Rubin and his community in the future.

And Danny Binstock threw caution to the wind and participated in the Tough Mudder challenge, completing the course (muddy slope, barbed wire, icy water and all!) in just three hours. If you would still like to show your support to PaL and make a donation to Danny's Tough Mudder cause, you can do so here.

Finally, I'm sure all our partners and tutors will be delighted to know that our Follow Up Coordinator Tanya Hackenbroch gave birth to a healthy baby boy, Yisroel Yaakov, last week.  Mazal tov to Tanya and her family!

Have a very enjoyable June!

Warm wishes

Questions from the PaL Mailbag...

Q:With the Queen's Jubilee coming up I've been thinking about the Royal Family - what is the origin of the prayer for their welfare that is said in most synagogues, and what is the real significance of the Queen to the Jewish community in the 21st century, given her largely figurehead status?"

A: The Mishnah in Avos (3:2) requires us to pray for the government of the country in which we live, for 'if it were not for awe of the authorities, people would swallow each other alive.'  This is an obvious truth - that the Jewish community and indeed, all of society can only thrive if the government is stable and functional.  British Jews are privileged to live in a 'malchus shel chessed' - a benevolent and supportive country, in which we can practice our religion freely, educate our children as we wish and are accorded the same rights and opportunities as other members of society, something rare in Jewish history. The Queen, as head of state, represents this kindness and stability; as such, we should prayer for her wellbeing and the success of her government and mark her Jubilee within our communities.
