Dear Reader,

We live in a world of instant communication these days - from online shopping to bbm messaging to live bus arrival updates, you can usually get the information you want or need, at the click of a button, within minutes if not seconds.

Of course, at PaL, we're offering Jews of all ages to the

opportunity to connect with a heritage that is ancient in its roots, but timeless in its reality. And our aim is to make sure that we utilise the latest technologies and innovations available to make that heritage as accessible as possible to all.

The latest addition to the PaL toolbox is the option for visitors to our website to have an online chat with one of the

"Live

team. If any questions occur to you while browsing the site

or completing an online registration form, just click and ask!

PaL partners can also look forward to some exciting new multi-media material coming their way before Rosh Hashanah.

Hoping to see you all at our annual event in September - click here for more details. In the meantime, have a wonderful summer.

Questions from the PaL Mailbag...

Q: I'm a university student living away from home in a small Jewish community. Recently I've started going to the local synagogue for the morning services to help make up the minyan but I know that during the summer when I'm at home I'll sleep in and miss shul. If I wake up very late, is it better for me to pray on my own at home, or just skip it for that day?

A: Even those who manage to catch a weekday morning minyan do sometimes oversleep -  we've all experienced that. Now, one is supposed to say the morning shema within the first quarter of the day - before around 9.20am in London at this time of year and somewhat later in the winter; after that, one may still say it, but one has missed the main opportunity.  For the amidah prayer and the rest of Shacharis, one has another hour or so.  However, in extremis, if one misses this time, one may still say the morning service until halachic midday, which is around 1.00pm during the summer.  After that, I'm afraid you've blown it (for shacharis anyway...there's always mincha)!
