If you know someone who would benefit from exploring their Jewish heritage in more depth, why not take Chanukah as your springboard and invite them to have a look at our website. The eight-day festival has strong associations with the rededication of Jewish learning, so it's the perfect opportunity.

Have a freilichen Chanukah and a fantastic month.

Questions from the PaL Mailbag...

Q:  My husband tends to get home from work quite late in the evenings - what do I do over Chanukah when he will definitely only get back after the proper time for candle lighting? And what about if he goes away on a business trip during that week - what do we do about lighting?

A: Ideally, Chanukah candles are lit at nightfall or as soon afterwards as possible.  But what happens if you're travelling or away and can't be at home at the right time?  Here are a few guidelines:

  • If you're likely to come home during the evening when the family are still up or there are people around in the street, then light late.
  • If you are away and upset by the idea of not lighting for yourself, then your partner at home should light only with him/herself in mind and then you may light where you are.
  • If you are staying with a family, it is possible to 'buy in' (contribute a small amount) to their lighting and not light your own menorah, although you may choose to light your own if you wish.
  • If you are travelling for the entire lighting period and do not arrive at your destination until after dawn, you are exempt from lighting.
