Dear Judy,

What will you be giving your friends and neighbours for Mishloach Manos this Purim? Most interpretations of Jewish law require us to give one person a gift of two different food items. But did you know that according to some, you c"Tastean fulfil the mitzvah of Mishloach Manos by sending not food items, but words of Torah?

While I'm not suggesting you ditch the Hamantaschen and bottles of grapejuice just yet, it's lovely to think that our PaL partners and tutors are sharing this type of 'Mishloach Manos' not only in the run up to Purim, but all year round!

What better way of achieving the ultimate goal of mishloach manos packages - peace, unity and harmony among our communities, everywhere!

Wishing you a Purim Sameach!

Questions from the PaL Mailbag...

Q:  This year Purim is on a Sunday, which is great news because I can actually enjoy it without rushing off to work in the middle! But I was wondering if there are any ramifications to be aware of, given that the holiday will begin straight after Shabbos finishes? What happens to the Fast of Esther?

A: When Purim falls on a Sunday it certainly makes it easier to have a full day of celebration.  Many shuls will offer a range of megillah readings, communal meals, family activities, parades and spiels, all at civilised times!  But obviously, this means that the day before Purim is Shabbos this year.  On the Shabbos itself, no preparations for Purim may be made, so if you need to leave a megillah, gragger or costume at shul, either take it on Friday or go to a shul which starts its services a while after Shabbos ends.

Incidentally, the Fast of Esther is observed on the previous Thursday, rather disconnecting it from Purim.
