Issue 44
June 2013
Sivan / Tamuz 5773

Dear Reader,

I would like to take the opportunity to introduce myself as the new PaL Programme Coordinator.  I really look forward to working with all of you and look forward to watching PaL grow and expand further.

At the end of this month we will begin the saddest period in the Jewish calendar, the three weeks beginning with the fast of the 17th Tammuz and ending with Tisha B'Av. There is more to this period than just mourning and fasting however - our Sages tell us that those who properly lament the loss of the Temple will merit to see its rebuilding. Why not add a 'brick in the wall' by committing to some extra Jewish learning this month?

You can find out about events of interest in our Round Up below, particularly the seed Shabbaton at the end of June. Or you could simply decide to pick up a new Jewish book to study - take a look at the new releases we've highlighted.

Have a meaningful month,

Rivka Graham

Questions from the PaL Mailbag...

QI've always been a bit confused between the concepts of the 'Three Weeks' and the 'Nine Days'. Can you briefly explain the difference please?

A: The so-called mourning period of the 'Three Weeks' run from the Fast of 17th Tammuz (marking various tragedies in Jewish history, especially breaching the walls of Jerusalem during the Roman occupation) to the Fast of the Ninth of Av (the gloomiest day in the Jewish calendar: the anniversary of the destruction of both Temples).  As the 'Three Weeks' progress, the mourning become more intense - from the Fast of Tammuz until the end of the month, there are restrictions on haircuts, music, weddings and certain other celebrations.  For the last 'Nine Days', bathing for pleasure and eating meat and drinking wine on weekdays is also forbidden.  This prepares us for the Fast of Av, a day of sad introspection on the variations of Jewish history.
