Dear Reader,

Tisha B'Av falls very early in the secular calendar this year (on July 16th) so in a little over two weeks you may well be heading off on your summer holidays.

Before you go, be sure to put a date in your diary for this year's annual pre-Rosh Hashanah lecture where Rabbi Paysach Krohn will once again inspire us.  This will take place on Monday 2nd September, at Finchley United Synagogue, Kinloss Gardens, N3 3DU.

You can find out about events of interest in our Round Up below.  Or you could simply decide to pick up a new Jewish book to study - take a look at the new releases we've highlighted.

Have a meaningful fast and an enjoyable summer

QI'm trying to beat the summer holiday hike in the cost of plane tickets by heading off on my holidays early this year - but I've heard you're not supposed to fly overseas in the week before Tisha B'Av. Is that true or just superstition?

A: You will have noticed that flights are more expensive at holiday times, presumably because more people want to travel then.  This may have a Jewish dimension, as rabbis are often asked if it's permitted to fly during the 'Nine Days', the first period of the month of Av leading to Tisha B'av, the saddest period of the Jewish calendar.  While some people consider these days as an inauspicious time for international travel, it is actually permitted to fly then, especially when there is a real need; if fact, despite the fast, if absolutely necessary for some kind of mitzah purpose, it is even permitted to fly on Tisha B'Av itself.  However, one should be mindful of the need for subdued conduct at this sad time and avoid live music and other celebratory activities until the afternoon after Tisha B'Av.
