Pal Header

Dear Reader,

As we all congratulate the Royal Family on their latest addition, at PaL we would also like to wish a big mazal tov to one of our dedicated Follow Up Coordinator's Abi who recently got married to Chaim Burman.  We wish them all the best and look forward to having Mrs Burman back on the PaL team soon.

Rosh Hashana is sooner than we think... see details below for this year's annual pre-Rosh Hashanah lecture where Rabbi Paysach Krohn will once again inspire us.

You can find out about events of interest in our Round Up below.  Or you could simply decide to pick up a new Jewish book to study - take a look at the new releases we've highlighted.

Have an enjoyable summer

Ask the Rabbi
with Rabbi Harvey Belovski
Questions from the PaL Mailbag...

QIt is soon Rosh Chodesh Ellul. I have heard that it is a custom to blow the shofar on a daily basis. Where does this custom originate from and why do we do it?

A: A careful look at the biblical story will reveal that Moses ascended Mount Sinai to obtain the replacement tablets of stone - he broke the first when he discovered the Golden Calf - on 1st Ellul. Forty days later, on the first Yom Kippur, Moshe returned holding the new tablets and informed the people that God had finally forgiven them. The rabbis consider these events as a precedent for our annual period of introspection and repentance, which runs from Rosh Chodesh Ellul to Yom Kippur. In Sephardic communities, Selichot - penitential prayers - are said from the start of Ellul (Ashkenazim only commence them a few days before Rosh HaShanah) and in all communities, the shofar is blown every weekday morning after Shacharis (morning prayers) to alert the community to the coming Days of Awe.
