Dear Reader,

This past month I had the opportunity to meet many of our PaL tutors and partners at our annual Rabbi Paysach Krohn event. I hope you enjoyed the lecture together with the 1,000 who attended.

If you did not manage to attend the lecture you can visit PaL's website http://www.phoneandlearn.org/ to listen to a recording online.  As the busy period of Rosh Hashana, Yom Kippur and Sukkos is over, we can try and incorporate the inspiration of the lecture and build on the recent Yomim Tovim by injecting more meaning into our daily routine.

In the month ahead PaL will be attending the Yeshiva and Sem fair both in Manchester (21st October) and in London (23rd October). For more information please contact me on rivka@phoneandlearn.org or call on 08000 553 276.

You can find out about events of interest in our Round Up below.  Or you could simply decide to pick up a new Jewish book to study - take a look at the new releases we've highlighted.

Kind regards

Ask the Rabbi
with Rabbi Harvey Belovski
Questions from the PaL Mailbag...

Q: By the end of October, once the clocks have changed, Shabbat begins very early on Friday and some people find it hard to leave work promptly enough to get home to light candles before Shabbat actually starts.  Of course, it's not permitted to light candles once Shabbat has started, so what should one do if one can't get to light candles before the latest time?

A: Unfortunately, lighting at work is not an option, as the idea of Shabbat candles is to create additional light where one will eat the Shabbat meal, not elsewhere.  It's also dangerous, and many employers won't allow you light candles and certainly not to leave them (you can't put them out).  If you do get stuck, the best thing is to ask someone at home or where you will be eating the Friday night meal to have you in mind when they light candles at the start of Shabbat.  If this isn't possible, or you live and are eating alone, it simply may not be possible to light candles that week.
