Dear Reader,

It was wonderful to meet so many different people from across the spectrum of the UK's Jewish community at the Jewish Living Expo in November! There were thousands of men, women and children browsing the many stalls and PaL was certainly one of the more high profile exhibitors. Around Wembley we could see many people using their 'Where will you find your PaL' bags to store literature and sample goodies as they took in everything on offer!

Visitors to our stand included Russell Bahar of the London Jewish News.  At PaL we are delighted to welcome many new partners and tutors to the PaL family

Now as our thoughts turn to chanukah, the holiday when we light the menorah, we find that the Torah compares the light of the menorah to learning Torah.  If you know someone who would benefit from exploring their Jewish heritage in more depth, why not take chanukah as your springboard and invite them to have a look at our website www.phoneandlearn.org

You can find out about events of interest in our Round Up below.  Or you could simply decide to pick up a new Jewish book to study - take a look at the new releases we've highlighted.

Kind regards

Questions from the PaL Mailbag...

QWhat is the message of chanuka, isn't it just a story of a Jewish resistance movement?

A: Many people think of chanuka as a simple winter festival of lights or even just a simple story of a Jewish resistance movement. In reality, it celebrates the victory in second Temple times of the Maccabees over the Greeks and Hellenists who taught a subtlety different, yet deeply threatening, ideology.  For the Hellenists, beauty, culture and philosophy were ends in themselves, something utterly alien to traditional Judaism; yet many Jews were taken in by it.  Authentic Judaism can embrace many of these ideas and aspirations, but only when they are placed firmly within the framework of Torah and mitzvot - i.e. they are a means to Jewish spirituality, rather than an end in themselves.  The war of the Maccabees celebrates this victory and the Menorah, the arms of which represent the various forms of human wisdom focused towards a single, spiritual goal, represents it perfectly.
