Issue 54
April 2014
Nissan 5774

Dear Reader,

You've barely had time to catch your breath from Purim but there's no time to relax because Pesach is almost here! Make sure you take the time to prepare yourself for this most important yom tov spiritually as well as
physically. Set aside the dustpan and cleaning cloth for a little while and browse through one of the myriad Haggadas now on the market, or book a place at one of the Pesach-inspired lectures and seminars highlighted below.
Please note that the PaL office will be closed between Monday 14th April and Wednesday 23rd April (inclusive).

Wishing you a chag kasher ve'sameach

Kind regards

Questions from the PaL Mailbag...

QEvery year my family has a discussion at the seder about the purpose of hiding the afikoman. My kids say they do it in order to bribe the adults to get a gift! But my husband claims there is a better reason for it... Can you shed any light on the matter for us?

A: Hiding the afikoman is one of the great children's pleasures of the seder.  In some families, the leader of the seder hides the broken matza and the children find it; in others, the children hide it and ransom the matza for a prize, as the seder cannot go on without it.  There is a reference in the Talmud to the practice of 'grabbing the matzos', on which the current model may be based.  It seems that the purpose is to establish the on-going attention and engagement of the children, and, perhaps, more importantly, to ensure that so much attention is given to the after-dinner matza that it won't be forgotten, something that can happen easily at the end of the meal.
