Dear Reader,

Now that everyone has had time to come back down to earth from the whirlwind that is Pesach, it's time to focus our sights on the summer ahead.  Why not take a peek at some of our recommended  reading for the month, or check out one of the communal events highlighted below.

This year, PaL is thrilled to be participating in the annual Maccabi GB Community Fun Run on Sunday 22nd June.  Would you like to run for PaL? You can run/walk either 1k, 5k or 10k and raise money for PaL while pariticpating in a fantastic cross communal event. Visit www.communityfunrun.org
for more information or call me on 08000 553 276.

Kind regards

Rivka Graham

Questions from the PaL Mailbag...

Q: I have heard that one should not schedule a wedding during the time between Pesach and Shavuos.  Can you explain why this is and are there any other restrictions during this time?

A: The Torah requires us to count the 49 days from Pesach to Shavuos, a period known as the Omer.  Having left Egypt on Pesach, we anticipate day by day the purpose of the Exodus - to receive the Torah on Shavuos.  Over the centuries, starting in Roman times, a number of tragedies occurred during this period, so that it developed a semi-mourning character.  In recognition of this, particularly the death of thousands of Rabbi Akiva's students, the Rabbis imposed a number of restrictions during part of the Omer (which days are restricted varies from community to community), including, most notably on celebrating weddings, listening to live music and having a haircut.
