Dear Reader,

The past month has been a busy one at PaL.  At the beginning of the month, PaL celebrated a double simcha. Follow up coordinators Leah and Abigail had a baby girl and baby boy on the same day!  We wish them both a hearty Mazal Tov.

I just returned from a fantastic trip to Israel, visiting various gap year programmes. As their year is coming to an end, students signed up to PaL to continue their Jewish learning through when they get back home.

You can find out about events of interest in our Round Up below.  Or you could simply decide to pick up a new Jewish book to study - take a look at the new releases we've highlighted.

Shavuos is only a few days away, wishing you a wonderful Yom Tov.

Kind regards

Rivka Graham
Programme Coordinator

Questions from the PaL Mailbag...

Q: It seems to me that Shavuos and Simchas Torah are very similar festivals. Why then do we celebrate Simchas Torah straight after Succos and not at this time of year?

A: Shavuos marks the culmination and ultimate purpose of the Exodus - the giving of the Torah, which took place seven weeks after Pesach.  It commemorates the defining moment in Jewish history when G-d made His will known to the world, forever changing His relationship with the world.  In contrast, Simchas Torah is the culmination of the intensive festival period that fills the month of Tishrei.  It begins with the majesty of Rosh HaShanah, moves on to the introspection of Yom Kippur and then quite naturally to the rejoicing of Succos.  The rabbis geared the annual Torah-reading cycle to reflect this - arranging it to begin and end on Simchas Torah, which occurs at the end of Succos.  So while Shavuos celebrates the gift of receiving the Torah, Simchas Torah marks another completed cycle of implementing and studying the Torah.
