Dear Reader,

On Sunday 22nd June, PaL attended the charity fair at Maccabi GB's Community Fun Run.  The event was buzzing from start to finish, from the track and the route, to the bustling PaL stall.  It was great to meet many of our tutors and partners in person, as well as to register many new tutors and partners.

Many thanks to Dov Harris, Danny Binstock and Judy Silkoff for participating in the run and raising funds for PaL.

You can find out about events of interest in our Round Up below.  Or you could simply decide to pick up a new Jewish book to study - take a look at the new releases we've highlighted.

Kind regards

Questions from the PaL Mailbag...

Q: During the summer months Shabbos finishes very late.  My wife finds it hard to stay awake for Havdala, is she able to go to sleep while it is still Shabbos, and can I make Havdala for her on Sunday morning?

A: In the northern hemisphere, Shabbos finishes very late during the summer - around 10.30pm in London and as late as midnight in Scotland.   Some people find it hard to stay up so late to complete their Shabbos obligations, such as Havdala.  While it is obviously ideal to see Shabbos out with Havdala in the usual way, if necessary, it is permitted to go sleep before Shabbos ends and make Havdala on awakening.  If possible, one should daven Ma'ariv before going to sleep (with the Havdala insertion in the fourth bracha).  On awakening, before doing anything that is forbidden on Shabbos, one should say 'baruch ha'mavdil bein kodesh le'chol' - blessed is He who distinguishes between holy (Shabbos) and mundane (weekdays). Once Shabbos ends it is not permitted to eat or drink anything other than water until one has heard Havdala.  In the event one does not make Havdala until Sunday morning, the spices and the candle are omitted.
