Dear Reader,

This past month I had the opportunity to meet many of our PaL tutors and partners at our annual Rabbi Paysach Krohn event. I hope you enjoyed the lecture together with the 1,000 others who attended. If you did not manage to attend the lecture you can visit our website

www.phoneandlearn.org/ to watch it online.

The month ahead presents world Jewry with an exciting opportunity.  Inspired by last year's Shabbos Project, which was based in South Africa, hundreds of cities and communities around the world are 'Keeping it Together'.  This means that from sunset on Friday 24th October until nightfall on Shabbos 25th October, Jews all over the world will be keeping Shabbos.  In the UK, this is called ShabbatUK.  At PaL we have been working closely with the ShabbatUK team and have specific Shabbos related material avaliable for your PaL learning sessions.  If you have any friends or family members who would like to learn more about Shabbos please contact me and we will find them a tutor.

On Thurs 23rd October 1000's of people will be gathering together at 4 key locations in London, Manchester, Leeds and Essex to share the experience of making Challah.  Please visit www.shabbatuk.org/challah-make/ to buy your ticket for this fantastic event.  Tickets must be purchased before Sunday 19th October.  For those of you attending the London Challah Make in Allianz Park, we will have a meeting point outside the venue to ensure we can all sit together.  To find out what events are taking place in your area, visit www.shabbatuk.org alternatively contact me on 08000 553 276 or email rivka@phoneandlearn.org

Wishing you all an easy fast

Kind regards

Questions from the PaL Mailbag...

Q: My PaL tutor told me that the year 5775 is the Shemitta year, I understand that there are restrictions for farmers based in Israel.  How does this affect me here in England?

A: This  Rosh HaShanah ushered in a Shemitta year. During this year, we acknowledge God's ownership of the Land of Israel by restricting its agriculture and attributing holiness to its produce.  While these laws only apply in Israel, they can impact on Israeli produce exported to the UK.  In brief, in the right season (check the Jewish press for bulletins explaining which produce is restricted and when), fruits should ideally not be purchased, but if acquired, must be treated with special sanctify: used entirely for food purposes and any edible waste stored before disposal until it has putrefied.  Vegetables and herbs should not be used.  Full details from your local rabbi.
