Questions from the PaL Mailbag...

Q: When growing up, we always celebrated the new year.  It has become a family tradition since then to make new year's resolutions.  Is it a problem according to Jewish Law to celebrate the new year?

A: We are blessed with a full set of Jewish festivals spread through the year, allowing us to experience and develop every conceivable emotion.  Yet it is understandable, given the attention afforded to New Year's Eve in the media, that Jews may want to participate.  There is a long-standing norm that Jews avoid integrating festive practices of other cultures and religions into our own, even those, such as New Year's Eve, which have few religious aspects.  So while we can't say categorically that it is forbidden to make new year's resolutions around 1st January, it would be preferable to save them for Yom Kippur, a day designated by our tradition for this purpose!
