Dear Reader,
Chanukah

One of the main themes of Chanukah is 'renewal'.  The festival commemorates the rededication of the Beis Hamikdash and this idea is emphasised further by the coming of Rosh Chodesh, the new month, on the 6th night of the holiday. Chanukah, then, is the perfect time for you to renew and strengthen your relationship with Hashem, your Jewish learning and perhaps even your PaL! Why not kickstart this by attending seed's One-to-One Chanukah learning event on 6th December - more details can be found below.

Warm wishes

Questions from the PaL Mailbag...

Q: My wife's parents have invited us for Shabbat lunch on 25th December and I know that my mother-in-law plans to serve roast turkey. I feel very uncomfortable about the idea of eating a turkey dinner (with all the trimmings!) on Xmas day, even though it will of course be 100% kosher, but my wife insists on going and says I'm being extremist about it. Who's right?

A: In addition to forbidding actual non-Jewish religious worship, the halachah forbids 'chukas hagoy' - those practices devised to achieve a non-Jewish religious objective.  Other practices, while associated with non-Jewish religious holidays, have no religious connotation and are thus permitted.  As such, while you might prefer to have cholent and kugel for Shabbat / Xmas lunch, it is permitted to eat turkey as it is simply a seasonal food devoid of religious significance.  But how exactly do you plan to light your pudding on Shabbos?!  More seriously, in cases like this, when family sensitivities are involved, it is important to be as flexible as possible and not allow one's gut response to prevail!
