It gives me great pleasure to welcome Rochel Taylor as the newest member of the PaL team.  Rochel will be PaL's Programme Coordinator whilst I am on maternity leave. You will of course continue to receive the same fantastic service from PaL, and I am sure Rochel's skills and enthusiasm will add greatly to the PaL team.

You can find out about events of interest in our Round Up below.  Or you could simply decide to pick up a new Jewish book to study - take a look at the new releases we've highlighted.

Questions from the PaL Mailbag...
Q: I've heard that some people stay up all night learning Torah on the first night of Shavuos. How important is this custom and does it apply equally to women as well as to men?

A: Shavuos is the anniversary of the Sinaitic revelation, when our antecedents received the Torah.  It's obviously appropriate to learn Torah to mark the occasion; in fact, one of the most well-known practices of the festival is to study Torah throughout the first night, culminating in an early-morning service.  It's known as 'Tikkun Leil' - repairing the night and is a relatively recent development.  A midrash suggests that our ancestors overslept at Sinai and had to be woken to receive the Torah.  The 16th-century mystics reckoned that we, their descendents, need to 'repair' the damage, filling the entire night of Shavuos with Torah instead of sleep.  Originally (and still in some communities), this 'repair' consisted of passages from across the gamut of Torah literature; today, most either study or attend shiurim.  Although in the past, the 'Tikkun' was attended only by men, it has been come increasingly common for women to participate.
